Baby sitter style
Have you noticed that there are some of us walking around out there that look a bit like Dawn from the Baby Sitters Club? Today I could have sworn that the very same Mallory from the Scholastic series was two seats infront of me on the train, red hair and all! And I’m pretty sure Nicole from Gary Pepper Vintage is indeed Claudia.
If you grew up in the nineties, chances are you were well aware of the Baby Sitters Club. Founded by tom-boy entrepreneur Kristy, the club of friends took looking after the neighbour hood kids very seriously. In between their daily dramas of Stacey having diabetes and Claudia struggling with her grades, the club was not only a place of friendship but incredible style.
If you happen to own an original Baby Sitter’s Club book, firstly can I borrow it? And secondly, take a look at what the characters are wearing on the illustrated cover – Overalls, loafers, scrunch down socks, chambray shirts and cardigans; pretty much everything that is currently available at Pixie Market.
True BSC fans will also be clued into the classic TV show and movie, as inspired by the books, which both featured awkward cliched moments and inspirational outfit clashes. The series also furthered the theme of each character having their own signature quirky style. Were you a Jesse or a Stacey?
One such Baby Sitter that has inspired a modern fashion follow is Claudia. Everyone’s favourite arty baby sitter is also the muse for the hilarious What Claudia Wore blog, which chronicles the satorial successes and stuff ups as written about in the books and on the illustrated covers.
So get yourself to the local used book store, hunt around for the DVD and say hello to your dear old BSC friends. Chances are they can teach you a little thing or too about wearing plaid on plaid and braiding your hair.
