To Rome with Ice Cream
Rome is a good time. It feels easy and is soaked in equal parts history and, if you’re lucky, golden light. All of the good parts you already know about. There’s no need to download any apps or look up any insider guides. Put your phone down, tuck that map back in your bag. Look up, stroll and graze on the platter of tourist attractions. And when you’ve had enough, stop off for some ice cream.
Do: All of the touristy things. Take photos of everything. Look up and point at things. Gesture wildly with excitement. Have a confusing conversation with a local. Take a terrible photo in front of the Trevi Fountain. Play out your own Woody Allen movie.
Go: With your mother, especially if she can speak Italian. And if you mother doesn’t, feel free to borrow mine. No one will encourage you more fervently to order another bowl of pasta than my mother.
Wear: Seersucker, pleated skirts, aviators, a cross body bag and the most comfortable shoes you own. If you’ve ever wanted to dress like a cliche, Rome in summer is the place to do so.
